Another Incredible Year: A Look Back at 2024

Before we step into a new year, let’s take a moment to reflect on the remarkable accomplishments we achieved together in 2024.

A Look Back at 2024: A Year of Progress and Impact

As 2024 comes to a close, we proudly celebrate the milestones that made this year extraordinary. BMHS has continued to serve as a trusted voice in public health and a champion of early intervention mental health support for ethnic minorities. Through unwavering advocacy, impactful education, and diverse project delivery, we have tirelessly worked to empower and uplift the communities we serve.

Advocacy Highlights

In 2024, BMHS remained steadfast in advocating for reform of the Mental Health Act—a significant step toward improving patient care and empowering individuals with greater control over their treatment. The draft Mental Health Bill, first introduced in 2022, was officially included in the King's Speech in July 2024 and is anticipated to become law within the next year. This marks a pivotal milestone in mental health advocacy.

Our research team collaborated with esteemed organizations, including the West Glamorgan Regional Partnership, Novartis, Champion X, GWR, NHS, South Wales Police, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales, the Home Office, Climate Change Org, Nature and Us, Open Cast, Mind Cymru, the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Congolese Development Project, Swansea City Foundation, Renew Mind Centre, Brecon Beacons National Park , Public Health Wales and Cwtch Mawr. These partnerships enabled us to contribute valuable insights and advance critical conversations on mental health and public health equity.

Educational Impact

In 2024, BMHS successfully trained over 780 individuals in crucial areas such as Mental Health First Aid (MHFA), Prevention and Management of Violence and Aggression (PMVA), and Basic Life Support (BLS). Furthermore, 10 corporate organizations participated in our Inclusive Mental Health Awareness Course, underscoring the increasing demand for culturally competent training.

During Black History Month, we partnered with Swansea University to deliver free Mental Health First Aid training to more than 75 students, equipping young leaders with the knowledge and skills to promote mental health awareness and resilience within their communities.

Project Delivery

BMHS demonstrated exceptional dedication this year by organizing 157 impactful events designed to support a diverse range of groups, including toddlers, children, parents, couples, singles, and older community members. These events addressed varied needs, offering opportunities for connection, education, and the promotion of mental well-being. Special focus was placed on children and young people with disabilities, bereaved individuals, and those seeking employment, ensuring they received meaningful and tailored support.

Held across indoor and outdoor venues in Swansea and beyond, these events fostered inclusive spaces that nurtured community engagement and resilience.

A hallmark of these events was their accessibility—provided entirely free of charge to all attendees and participating organizations.

This success was made possible by the invaluable support of our partners, including the West Glamorgan Regional Partnership, Swansea Council, and funding from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, as well as contributions from Diverse Cymru, Book Council of Wales, Swansea University, and Wales & West Housing. Their collaboration and unwavering dedication enabled BMHS to deliver transformative projects that empower individuals and foster a healthier, more inclusive community.

Additional Highlights
