On June 15th, the BMHS hosted an insightful workshop on healthy diets, with a particular emphasis on managing blood sugar levels. The session, led by Dr. Frank Bekomson from Neath Port Talbot Hospital, attracted a diverse group of participants eager to learn effective strategies for managing diabetes through dietary choices.
Dr. Bekomson began by explaining the different types of diabetes, including Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. He also discussed prediabetes, a critical stage where blood sugar levels are elevated but not yet in the diabetic range, highlighting the importance of regular medical check-ups to prevent progression to full-blown diabetes.
The workshop covered essential aspects of diabetes management, emphasing the role of a balanced diet. Dr. Bekomson outlined the importance of incorporating all five main food groups—fruits and vegetables, carbohydrates, proteins, dairy, and healthy fats in moderate proportions—into daily meals. He dispelled common myths about "diabetic diets" and encouraged participants to make healthier food choices consistently. He gave practical dietary advice, including options for balanced meals at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as healthy snacking tips for those on diabetes medications.
Dr. Bekomson also addressed the complications associated with uncontrolled diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke, kidney problems, and nerve damage. He stressed the importance of regular health checks, particularly monitoring HbA1c levels, which provide an average of blood sugar levels over the past three months. Acute complications like hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia, as well as chronic issues such as diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy, were discussed in detail.
To manage diabetes effectively, Dr. Bekomson recommended registering with a GP, undergoing regular blood tests, and adopting an active lifestyle. He emphasised the benefits of evening exercise and provided practical tips for staying active, such as taking long walks for those unable to afford gym memberships.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Alfred Oyekoya, the BMHS Executive Director, who expressed his gratitude to Dr. Bekomson and the participants. Oyekoya remarked, "We are immensely grateful to Dr. Frank Bekomson for sharing his expertise on managing diabetes through diet. His insights have empowered us with practical knowledge to lead healthier lives. This workshop has been a valuable opportunity for our community to understand the importance of dietary choices in managing blood sugar levels. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event."
The workshop was deemed a resounding success, providing attendees with the knowledge and tools necessary to make informed dietary choices and manage their diabetes effectively. The BMHS Hub looks forward to hosting more of such enlightening sessions in the future.
