Creative Writing Update: Mental Health Themed Writing.

ronald7260

In this class, we explored the concept of expressive writing and its relationship with mental health. Different forms of expressive writing include free verse poetry, confessional writing, short stories and novels, diaries, journals, and blogs.

The tutor delved into the psychology of creative writing as it relates to mental health. For example, writing about a repressed traumatic experience has been found to be beneficial in helping the individual move past the experience. Two major forms of writing; first person and third person were also discussed in detail.

Participants were asked to connect with their writer’s triangle and come up with writing in the first person and then the third person. Works were read out and participants shared how they felt doing them.

The class ended with assignments to participants to develop their work further.
